Here is what I think is really going on here (I'm tired of talking
around it.):

There are some who feel threated by any new idea. They are not going
to like it if someone uses a different rule-set, a different
boardsize, or if they find something that works better than the old
boring classical approach to go.

They will tell you 19x19 is the only "true way", that Japense rules is
the only "right" rule-set and that they don't need no stink'in new
programming ideas. They will tell you that there is something unique
about their game that doesn't scale and that no data is relevant that
doesn't back up their belief system. They will criticize anything
that is an original new idea and they don't want change. And if you
present them with real data, they will find creative ways to ignore the
findings if it doesn't suit their belief system. (It doesn't apply to
humans, to 19x19, to whatever I decide it doesn't apply to.)

Having said that, I will admit that we are ALL like that to varying
degrees. We all have belief systems and we tend to react if any idea is
presented that is contrary to that belief system.

In this discussion I observed someone like this, who just attacked 9x9
go, UCT, the feasibility of an interesting study and everyone with
time invested in exploring UCT and Monte Carlo. Someone naturally
tried to defend and the defense is the thing that offended you?
