That is right. Though lately I have noticed some dot coms switching to 
their national TLD to give people a better idea of where they are 
located. This makes sense for businesses whose primary service area is 
regional.

I have also seen sites built off of subdomains. Thus someone registers 
"com.au" and then sells off subdomains for xxxxxxxx.com.au, 
zzzzzzz.com.au, etc.
