Sorry,
1) Windows XP
2) Yes, the problem occurs only since Monday, only on that computer, only for M: hard disk, only on the root, any directory of M: behave normally when opened 3) They show normally when I try to attach a jpeg file of the root in an email message, browsing in thumbnail mode. (I have no idea what Picasa or Irfanview are) 4) I looked at the doping menus in M: on that computer. I could not figure out a solution. -- I searched in the computer help. No result. -- I have had success before with this group, so you were my first outside source for help. -- I am not computer savvy and I learned English when I was 40. Finding the correct technical word to hit the target with Google is often a nightmare.

To get an accurate answer we need more info.
*) Which OS?
*) Do thumbnail file names show in other folders?
*) Do thumbnails appear correctly in other apps (eg Picasa, Irfanview)?
*) What have you tried to solve the problem (can we at least assume
some web searches?)
