Linux is another Unix derivative which is loosely based on BSD, not encumbered by the AT&T code and trademark, and is both open source and free. Much of OS X is open source [not the GUI], and considerably less expensive than comparable versions of Windows which is entirely proprietary.

Mac OS X's Darwin foundation is mostly based on FreeBSD [UC Berkeley] and Mach [Carnegie Mellon]. While BSD and Mach are owned by those universities, they and their derivatives are open source and free with licenses. The main lawsuit, settled over a dozen years ago, that affected BSD was from AT&T's Unix code contained in BSD. The code was removed in free and other releases.
