Can anyone offer a solution / reason for what happened here to me?

(see problem below) Okay, for now it fixed itself. But WHY? and more importantly, what can I do to avoid a "next time" problem?

Here's the story. Yesterday, late morning the double click and right click would not open or save OE email attachments. The file name would highlight blue, but other than that it seemed "dead" I closed down and opened OE numerous times. Rebooted the computer numerous times. No improvement was had.

So last night, I figured I'd shut down OE for the night so that Windows Home Server would make a nice back-up copy and get all the emails backed-up without missing any last arriving stragglers - in case I needed to do a restore and I didn't want to risk losing overnight emails that missed getting backed-up.

So, this morning the computer was still on, and I opened OE. Well, loe and behold the double click and right click work. The first two or three tries I had to "mentally push" it. Double click. I'd see a slight reaction like it was going to open.... but Acrobat did not open it, rather it sort of turned into a no-go. Double clicked again and again, and then I got a long delayed open. We're talking a period of maybe 120 seconds here of double clicking XLS and PDF file attachments.

After a few opens and closes of Acrobat attachments, now my emails open Acrobat "instantly" with the PDF files and open Excel "instantly" with XLS files.

What caused this problem? What preventive measures can I take now to mitigate problems in the future?

Colin

Subject: [CGUYS] Problem with Outlook Express 6.0

Today, suddenly my Outlook Express 6.0 running under MS XP service pack 2 stopped recognizing a double click or a right click for email attachments.

Meaning that I can not open the attachments and I can not even save the
attachments to disc with a right click, to then open from the disc.

I found that I am able to save the attachments by doing: File / Save Attachments. This is not a satisfactory fix to the problem though

What I have done so far:

I've tried deleting all the files in the directory C:\Programs\Outlook
Express. With the intent of copying a set of files from another computer.
But as soon as I delete them the system "magically" re-creates than all over
again. The problem still exists.

I've just deleted about 10,000 email messages, thinking maybe too many
messages could be the problem (I may have 100's of thousands of
messages, for all I know) The problem still exists.

I tried to download OE service pack #1 from the Microsoft website. The
message was that my current copy is newer than the download, permission
denied.

Of course I've shut down the computer (for an hour) and then booted.
I rebooted several times today. The problem still exists.

I have a backup on my Windows Home Server, but I do not know what files or
directories to restore to get yesterday's copy of Outlook Express 6.0 or
whatever the offending issue is.

No, I have not installed any new software today.

Yes, I have Symantec Antivirus running all the time.

Yes, I have just run a "quick scan" from Symantec Antivirus.

Any ideas?

Colin
