Following up your tip, I see that many are reviewed as junk. Been down
that road with SD card readers before.
Does anyone know of such a USB GSM SIM reader/dongle that they can
personally recommend?

Your idea got me Googling. I discovered folks in Hong Kong selling USB
dongles that accept SIM cards. They claim to be able to transfer
everything off the SIM to the computer. I don't know if that will be of
any help with photos. Cost is $2 + $8 shipping.
If your phone does not have a memory card, may I recommend a program
called Data pilot. It works well and allows you to back up most of
the data on your phone. HOWEVER ONE CAVEAT be sure to read through
their chart on what it will actually let you do with your
phone. Different cell companies (Verizon being one of the worst)
lock down certain functions to make you go through their network to
get stuff, like ring tones etc..
