If you just barely meet the Vonage requirements, you likely aren't going
to be happy campers trying to surf and talk at the same time, or for
example downloading the latest Windows update and talking. In technical
terms, there is one distinct disadvantage to giving up a wired line,
when your DSL goes down, your phone line is down too. It's the same
reason people shouldn't have cable phones as their only phone line. If
you're planning on keeping the phone line, there isn't much chance of
that being a problem. I note incidentally that if you add the cost of
DSL plus Vonage, you have a plan cost that equals or slightly exceeds
Verizon's Freedom Calling Plan if you guys make a lot of long distance
calls.

I note that if you bundle the DSL, DirecTV and phone line, you may even
be eligible for a slight discount, or you could try adding your
cellphones for a discount as part of a bundle. Vonage also seems to
have raised its monthly rates so some calculations of what you would
gain or switch should likely determine what you actually choose.
