That knob on the keyboard isn't anything magical, it just connects to the regular system volume control that hangs out in your notification area. For some silly reason, I'd like to THINK you checked your volume control before writing the list about low volume.
My buddy has a problem with his cat also. We found a nice keyboard locking app for him, so as long as he remembers to engage it, the cat can't type!
