I have two gmail accounts - my regular one that I download into Thunderbird, and this one that I read online. Since the online Gmail interface collates messages by Subject line, it removes the need to subscribe using the Digest option. Those voluminous threads you refer to, appear as one-line that can be easily skipped, if you wish.
