Just as an FYI - I think tweaking timings/timeouts is good, but not
necessary for initial merging. Same thing for the callback stuff. If you can
get the major points I mention (and assuming I don't find any more), we can
hopefully get that merged, and then Stephen's patch merged. Once your API
changes have been merged and baked in, we can look at merging your other
changes as well.
