Somewhat more exciting than splitting is that it will be possible to decouple buffers from windows. You will be able to move buffers from window to window. Currently though, we have a lot of code in conkeror built on the assumption that a buffer is fixed in one window, so the overall direction of that roadmap I posted is to rewrite those parts of conkeror.
