Okay, based on what everybody is saying, Google Groups it shall not be.

I could host the list on my server.  I only hesitate to do so because it's
hard to guarantee the uptime that a mail host requires and still be able
to upgrade software and such.  I would also not be looking forward to
being the one responsible for spam control.
