Works for me here, use it every day. So it must be possible. ;-)

The disk only comes when I middle click on some non-link and
non-input-field location.

I'm no more sure, but I suspect that the following in conkerorrc is
responsible for that, because it's what comes closest to it:

require("clicks-in-new-buffer.js");
