I've been using M-w (I see the two are bound to the same thing).
The reason I was trying to find a solution with middle-click is that
it would then be uniform with other applications.
But even without that, progress has been made. With auto-scroll
deactivated, if I mistakenly middle-click and nothing happens (unless
the mouse cursor happens to be in the desired field), I can segue into M-w.
