Thank you Benjamin. Actually the residual problem is systemwide and not a user config problem (I created a brand-new account and it happens for the new user too).
I'm steeling myself for a reinstallation of the OS from scratch. Last time I had to do this it took about a day and a half to get the system back to a usable state, but it looks like I have no choice.
