Robert Muir commented on CONNECTORS-93:
---------------------------------------

Karl, OK: i looked at Solr's CHANGES.txt for their first release, and indeed
there is a 'upgrading from previous versions' section (to guide users that were
using trunk copies before release or whatever)

So I think it would be good to just add an 'upgrading from previous versions'
section and add things like the name change?
I'd feel more comfortable if you wrote the text for this! I could commit this
as-is, or you could modify the patch, either way.

I don't think we should retroactively create any new JIRA issues for things
that have been done. but related to the topic i had a few ideas in general
regarding JIRA (not trying to suggest any hard-and-fast rules either):

If a user reported something on the user list (strange behavior, bug, api
problem, javadoc typo, whatever) that inspires a code change, i think we should
always open a jira ticket, no matter how trivial. this way its easy to give the
user credit for contributing.

Along with the previous, its also good to suggest users to create their own
tickets in JIRA if at all possible. This gets them sucked into signing onto
JIRA.

Finally, for issues that might require a lot of fairly mechanical/simple
changes like the name change issue, we can always open an issue: this gives an
opportunity for additional contributors to do some of the work. A good example
of this is LUCENE-1257, which was generification of Lucene API for 3.0. Lots of
people stepped up and contributed help, even risking code reviews from our
picky Generics Policeman.

I'm probably that last person that should be suggesting these things, but it
was just some general ideas that might invite more contributions.

> As mentioned on the connectors-dev@ list (change the format of CHANGES.txt),
> I propose we modify CHANGES.txt
> to give credit to contributors who have given bug reports, comments, patches,
> etc.
> I'll volunteer to go thru the mail archives and jira issues that are marked
> 'resolved' and upload a patch here.
