Quote: " It appears that the damage was inflicted by a pointed tool some
years ago and although the incision is not deep, dirt that accumulated in
the affected area makes it very visible. Obviously in order to remove it
the principle of minimum intervention would be compromised, but considering
how sensitive the space is and how offensive the symbol is, removing it
appears sensible. "

How about making a tinted fill that matches the alabaster?
It would make the offensive symbol almost invisible to most visitors, yet
would respect the integrity of the object.
