Adam, I don't know if the dirt is problematic to remove but if it is then you might like to consider laser cleaning, which has been used very successfully on a number of medieval alabaster monuments in both the UK and USA (and probably elsewhere). Laser cleaning systems are now available for rental for both small and big projects and are much more accessible than they were 10-20 years ago.
