The National Trust, Internship in Preventive Conservation
2-year Internship starting January 2017
Location: Heelis, Kemble Drive, Swindon, Wiltshire, SN2 2NA

Educational Stipend: £18,000 p.a. (£20,000 p.a. London weighting)

This internship is hosted by the National Trust, based principally at the 
National Trust's central office at Heelis, including work at the Trust's London 
office (20 Grosvenor Gardens, SW1W 0DH) and historic houses in England, Wales

The internship will focus on preventive conservation within the National Trust 
Consultancy. You will be part of a professional team, putting your training, 
experience, research and analysis skills into practice.

You will learn how the Trust understands and manages indoor environments, and 
the conservation needs of its historic collections and interiors, by gathering 
and analysing environmental and collections management data to support the 
provision of strategic advice and decision-making. You will have the 
opportunity to challenge conventional thinking, develop new ideas and be 
proactive in sharing your approach about how preventive conservation projects 
can bring NT properties to life, balancing conservation requirements with 
visitor access needs.

Through this internship, the candidate will be given the opportunity to develop 
experience in:

- Monitoring and managing environmental agents of deterioration (relative 
humidity & temperature, light, insect pests and mould), and in measuring the 
impact of these agents and their control through research projects, into light, 
mould, fluctuating RH and ventilation;
- analysing and assessing patterns of expenditure in preventive and remedial 
conservation to inform strategic planning for historic house conservation;
- prioritising and planning programmes of remedial conservation,
- designing and delivering training to operational house staff and conservation 
staff, contributing to the development of in-house training materials
- opportunities to shadow and assist professional staff and collections care 
staff in a wide range of historic houses.

You will also be encouraged to make use of in-house professional development 
opportunities and to attend external conferences and seminars. The position is 
likely to involve travel and occasional overnight stays to visit other National 
Trust properties.

Applicant requirements: This internship work based placement would suit a 
graduate in the conservation of cultural heritage, who wishes to develop their 
training and experience in preventive conservation and /or conservation 
management.
