Applications are invited for appointment as *Assistant Rare Book
Conservator/Assistant Paper Conservator (at the rank of Assistant Librarian
II) in the University Libraries* (Ref.: 494090), to commence as soon as
possible, on a two-year fixed-term basis, with the possibility of renewal
subject to mutual agreement.

Applicants must have completed a Master’s degree in Conservation from an
accredited graduate training programme in conservation (or equivalent),
plus two years of relevant conservation experience in a research library or
archive, with demonstrated experience in either book, paper or photograph
conservation. A basic understanding of Western and Asian conservation
materials and techniques, and a strong understanding of the material
science and ethics of conservation as it applies to library and museum
materials are required. Excellent hand skills, attention to detail and a
demonstrated ability to handle fragile and rare materials with care are
expected. The successful candidate will have detailed knowledge and
experience of high-level paper, book or photograph conservation treatments
and a broad knowledge of collection care activities.

Applicants should possess a good command of spoken and written English;
good spoken Chinese is a plus.  They should have strong organizational
skills, including the ability to prioritize and achieve goals; good
analytical and problem-solving skills; the ability to adapt to change; and
the flexibility to work both independently and collaboratively.  Computer
literacy and research skills are required.  A track record of presentations
at international conferences and publishing in the field of conservation
are highly desirable.  Membership and participation in AIC, IADA, IIC or
other related professional organizations is an advantage.  Shortlisted
candidates will be requested to present a portfolio of completed treatment
work during the interview.

Reporting to the Head, Preservation and Conservation in the HKU Libraries,
the appointee will share responsibility for the physical care of the
collections, including preservation activities and the conservation
treatment of printed books, manuscripts and other holdings in the HKU
Libraries.  Responsibilities include evaluating and treating collections;
assessment, treatment and handling needs of materials selected for
digitization; providing support for exhibition preparation and
installation; participation in environmental monitoring and IPM programmes;
assisting with emergency response involving library materials; overseeing
the daily operation of the conservation lab in the absence of the Head,
Preservation and Conservation, and the Assistant Preservation Librarian;
managing special projects and other duties as assigned.

A highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience
will be offered, in addition to annual leave and medical benefits.  At
current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income.  The
appointment will attract a contract-end gratuity and University
contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totaling up to 15% of basic
salary.
