 Subject: Corroding ironwork
Message: I have a few 15th/16th century knife blades that are showing signs of
flaking - the blade surfaces are slightly lifting, I suspect due to ferric
chloride in the blade. Is there a (preferably non-electrolytic) process that
will safely remove these unwanted salts from the ironwork and bring it to a
stable condition? Also, is there a UK-based product that I can get to prevent
further deterioration should the RH increase during the colder months where
they are stored?

 Subject: RE: Adhesive for ethafoam?
 Message:
Hello Tara,

At National Museums Liverpool, England, UK, we've been using Techbond 240
manufactured by Power Adhesives. It's an EVA-based hot-melt adhesive that has
passed the Oddy test in the UK as suitable for permanent use. A cursory Google
search suggests it is available in the US.

I can provide our Oddy test results for reference, however I'd be mindful that
the composition of products can vary if they're manufactured in different parts
of the world. For peace of mind, It might be prudent to repeat the Oddy test
with a sample from a US supplier. I hope that's helpful.

Kind Regards,
Mark

Subject: Adhesive for ethafoam?

Dear Colleagues-

What are conservators using nowadays to adhere ethafoam to corrugate board that
is safe for permanent storage? All of the hot low temp melt adhesives do not
pass Oddy and I am looking for something that can be used outside of a lab
setting easily. I can use PVA if I need to, but was hoping for other solutions.

Thanks so much for your suggestions and recommendations in advance,

Tara

Subject: Sad news - Sharon Manitta, textile conservator
Message: I'm sorry to announce that Sharon Manitta, graduate of the Textile
Conservation Centre, textile conservator, former dress designer and lecturer in
fashion history, and long time advocate for Democrats Abroad in the UK, died
peacefully from cancer on Tuesday 26th May 2026. She was a powerful advocate
for conservation and frequently spoke with the media to correct their
inaccurate references to conservators and their work: for a while she was the
press contact for the United Kingdom Institute for Conservation (before it
became ICON).
After she came to the UK to study at the TCC she stayed, settling in
Salisbury, Wiltshire, and rewarded those who helped her with fresh-baked
brownies and other American treats. She was a fount of knowledge about
textiles, fashion and American politics, having campaigned for the young JFK
and interviewed Lennon and Ono for Rolling Stones magazine among her many
experiences. She was a generous friend, a dedicated textile conservator and a
committed democrat. She will be much missed.

Hi Catarina,

it might be a bit far to travel to, but I can also highly recommend the classes
offered by Randy Wilkinson (Fallon & Wilkinson), Furniture Conservator in
Connecticut - USA. He has taught classes at universities to conservation
students and courses to professionals in affiliated fields for many years.

Wood Identification and Gilding Restoration Classes

Additionally, the Wooden Artifacts Group of AIC is planning online lectures
about wood identification together with Arlen Heginbothom (Getty).

Best wishes,

Carola

Artworks

Dear colleagues, I would like to inquire whether anyone is aware of existing
training opportunities-courses, workshops, or short-term programs-focused on
the anatomical identification of wood species, specifically in the context of
artworks and cultural heritage objects. I am particularly interested in
hands-on or practice-oriented training that addresses identification methods
relevant to conservation and technical art history (e.g., macroscopic and
microscopic features, sampling strategies, and diagnostic criteria for commonly
used species in art objects). If you know of any institutions, universities,
or organizations that offer such courses (preferably in-person), I would be
very grateful if you could share with me. Thank you in advance for your time
and assistance. Best regards, Catarina Pinheiro

Subject: [EVENT] Icon26 Group Event: 'Treatment Cycles for Easel Paintings'
Message: Icon26 Group Event: 'Treatment Cycles for Easel Paintings'

How long do conservation treatments really last - and how do we decide when it
is time to intervene again? Join the Paintings Group for a thought-provoking
online session exploring the treatment cycles of easel paintings.

22 June 2026
2 pm – 5 pm BST | Online

This event brings together conservation professionals to reflect on how
treatments evolve and endure over time, and how decisions around care,
re-treatment, and long-term outcomes are made in practice.

Through a series of short presentations, speakers will share insights drawn
from case studies, research, and professional experience. The session will
address key questions around the lifespan of conservation treatments, what
influences the need for further intervention, and how approaches shift in
response to new research and changing contexts.

The programme will also engage with core conservation principles, such as
minimal intervention and reversibility, considering how these are interpreted
and applied in real-world scenarios rather than as fixed or universal rules.

Designed for conservators, students, and anyone with an interest in paintings
conservation, this session offers an opportunity to gain practical insights,
engage with current thinking, and connect with peers across the field.

The full programme and speaker information will be announced soon.
