Jeff, Dippy and any other with the lockup problem exiting X, try this
kernel:

It's just a bare kernel, but the basics should work (keyboard, mouse, X)
I could be imagining it, but it seemed to speedup X a bit here. The down
side is it make Xpmac incredibly slow - but the goal is to lose Xpmac
eventually.
Ian - if you're about, I disabled shared IRQ's on the IDE stuff, you
might see if that makes the odd dmesgs go away.
