Hi Leigh!

Make sure you are using the right device, for example - 
/dev/hda1.

Make sure that RPMS is all caps, i.e.
/mnt/Mandrake/RPMS

I got the same error because I ftp'ed the files from a windows98
program and it did not copy right. 

To check, start the install, after you get the error, Use CTRL-ALT-F2
to go to the console.

type "ls -l /mnt/Mandrake" 
if the RPMS directory is not RPMS that will cause a error.

To fix it:
mv /mnt/Mandrake/rpms /mnt/Mandrake/rpms2
mv /mnt/Mandrake/rpms2 /mnt/Mandrake/RPMS
