It's very simple: if a distribution comes out with all preconfigured
correctly for using the SCSI emulation as driver for IDE CD-ROM drives
(module compiled into kernel or loaded at boot time in
/etc/rc.d/rc.modules or /etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit, link /dev/cdrom* set to
/dev/scd*) noone will notice anything. They will only see that when they
add a CD writer that it works out-of-the-box without any configuration
work or they rip an audio CD for copying the music to their portable MP3
player and say 'Wow, how simple does it work with Mandrake 7.1, it's the
best distribution',
