I think that the ting is that you have to make your own initrd.
the initrd normaly includes things that need to be loaded before the
system is starded. scsi-host drivers for examle.
SO what you have to do is to make a new one
mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.2.15-3mdk.img 2.2.15-3mdk
then add a entry for it in lilo.conf and run /sbin/lilo
