Thanks for your help Buchan. This message is coming from a 2.4.22-pre6 kernel compiled with -Os, had to search a bit to find where to change it but that's what learning is all about. You just need someone to point you in the right direction, even if they've heard it all before.
Have you tried with kernel 2.6?
