I think that's possible, but I wouldn't (personally) rely on it.  And
I don't see an extra 5 minutes worth of work as a "problem"...  I see
it as a means to make sure your kernel doesn't get fubarred and you
end up re-installing.  I like the safe method to update my kernel.
