Hi all,

I've just installed 7.2, but stuffed up during the final stages. When
setting the password for root, my choice wasn't accepted because of too
few characters. I tried to set it to be another, but because there's no
indication of what's been written (such as the usual * symbols), I
inevitably stuffed it and couldn't get a matching pair. You can't go
back (install flaw in my opinion) and you can't go forward so I just
rebooted.

I used Tom's rescue boot disk to get into the system and configure LILO
so the machine boots properly. Then I booted into single mode and tried
to set the password for root using the passwd command. It asked for the
new password twice as expected then give me the tokens updated message.
Okay, I thought. Done.

However, upon rebooting the stupid computer wouldn't accept the new
passwd when I tried to log in (and no, it ain't a caps problem :o) ).
Fine. So I booted into single mode again and took out the password from
root's entry in the /etc/passwd file. Rebooted the machine. This time
when I entered root as the user name it was rejected immediately. No
chance to put in the password.

So I booted into single yet again, and tried to use linuxconf to set the
password. It seemed to think it had done a good job, but again it
failed.

Any pointers? How can I set the password properly?

Thanks in advance,

Paul Dorman.
