Speaking of modules.conf...
I just found this in 7.2. I expect that it is in cooker as well.
The installer sets up the sound card with Alsa. The secure kernel does
not have Alsa in the /lib/modules/<kernel-ver> tree! If you have the
secure kernel (and it probably happens with others as well), you can only
get the correct sound config by editing the /etc/modules.conf by hand (and
removing alsa references), Installing Alsa under the current running
kernel version from a tarball, or by changing default kernels.
Since I use soundcards that are supported by the stock kernels (except on
my Vaio, but that is a special case), I just hack the modules.conf. For a
newbie, I expect this is a big headache. (I have already seen more than
one post on the local list about it.)
