OK, Must correct myselt:
The REALLY needed updates are (at least with 2.4.0-5mdk)

        binutils
        libbinutils
        kernel-2.4

I did it with rpm-4 installed, so I can't tell you it'd work with rpm-3.x....
Notice that you must have a .config file for the kernel, or it will stop 
while compiling...
If someone need it, I can these compiled .i686.rpms (UNSUPPORTED, obviously!) 
on my ftp server... let me know  ;-)
