AH HA!  Spoke too soon!

OK, there IS a catch.  HAVE to remove the index file for it.  KMail doesn't
do any internal checking to see if the index file is correct.  (netscape does,
and under windows will invalidate and rebuild a mail folder if it has been 
altered - so when I go back to windows the mail should be ok)

Re-created the link, DELETED the index file - and KMail built a new one
with all my old mail.
