solved my own problem, but I'm not certain how to solve it: the
ViaVoice failure was due to the loss of the environment variable
ECIINI which defines the default configuration file.

When Emacs is loaded from the gnome panel, if I run the "set" shell
command to see my current environment, it contains none of the
settings from /etc/profile.d or my .bashrc.

Why is this?  Is /etc/profile.d deprecated?
