OK here goes:

before starting X e.g. in /etc/rc.local

        modprobe agpgart
        modprobe r128

This loads the DRM Kernel module

now edit the "Module" Section of /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
Add:
        Load "dri"
        Load "glx"

that should be enough thou I also load "vbe" & "dbe" but have forgotten why
:)
now:
         startx 2> xfree86.log

Once X has started or not as the case maybe, you should see the line:

        Direct rendering enabled

That should do it.
