I would tend to agree with your friend that the video card is the problem.
I have a P5A-B mobo w/ K6-2 450 and it is rock solid under both Linux and
Win2K.  I have run this machine with both an ATI 3D RageII+ and a Matrox
G200 with no problems.

I have another machine with a Riva TNT2 and while I haven't had too many
problems under Linux, the only way I can get the machine to be stable under
Win2K is if I use the Micro$oft drivers.  As soon as I load the
manufacturer's drivers or the NVidia detonator drivers, crash and burn.
