I had the same problem but fixed it by linking the new library with the old:

-rw-r--r--    1 root     root       180364 Jul 16  2001 /usr/lib/libpng.a
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           11 Dec 20 13:39 /usr/lib/libpng.so ->
libpng.so.2*
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           18 Dec 20 13:37 /usr/lib/libpng.so.2
-> libpng.so.2.1.0.12*
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root     root       154588 Jul 16  2001
/usr/lib/libpng.so.2.1.0.12*
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           18 Jan 16 22:54 /usr/lib/libpng.so.3
-> libpng.so.2.1.0.12*
