I have the same configuration you do :o(


OOOH, update.  OK, in Mandrake 6.1 (where I started,
upgrading ->7.1->7.2) new users start at UID 500.  In
8.1 they start at UID 501.  So actually (and this is
OK since they're both me), user walser's home
directory has the same UID ownership as david (which
is OK because I use the walser user in 7.2 and the
david one in 8.1 and share files between).  So if I
give david a public_html in 8.1, it works correctly. 
Phew.  Well, this behavior might have been intended by
the Apache team then, dunno.
