Update to the latest devfsd clean up /lib/dev-state: rm -rf /lib/dev-state reboot it should work. Note that you won't see /dev/hdc4 until you actually try to access it for the first time, i.e. ls -l /dev/hdc* won't show it but ls -l /dev/hdc4 will. You may need to recreate some links after you removed /lib/dev-state. If in doubt, at least remove /lib/dev-state/hd* /lib/dev-state/discs* /lib/dev-state/ide* -andrej
