I have also been using OpenOffice 641 quite a bit. There are some issues (641C has a crash bug when inserting a frame under linux compiled with gcc3, 641 has crashed with some MS fonts). Note however that OpenOffice.org (as it should be called) now compiles with gcc 3. I never managed o get it anywhere near compiling with 2.96. I can put in some time trying yo update the build in contrib (have been planning on compiling it for a while), but I think it will be more than a one-man job to get it in contrib anytime soon.
