Mike, I got the same 'mem missing' segfault installing on Athlon 900, 512Mb RAM. The problem in my case appears the be that I was using software RAID for / and /usr. I reinstalled only RAIDing /home and it went fine (after failing 3 times in about the same place before).
Any use to you ?
