I haven't been following the discussion of that
closely, but I had a problem that sounds something
like that and fixed it.

What would happen is after drakfirsttime finished X
would crash.  Turns out root owned the .gnome
directory in my home directory, and drakfirsttime was
trying to write to a file there (gdm) and couldn't, so
crashed.

Removed that directory, and drakfirsttime -> KDE
worked fine.
