You need to make an image for the new kernel.

mkinitrd /boot/initrd-2.4.19-17mdk.img 2.4.19-17mdk

Then fix the simlink initrd.img -> initrd-2.4.19-17mdk.img

Don't forget to run lilo before rebooting.

You may want to try the new mkinitrd rpm Guillaume Cottenceau proposed:
