[Cooker] X11 hangs kernel

I've been trying to get a handle what the problem is with my new system,
but when I try a kernel > 2.4.19, my system hangs as soon as X11 fires up, requiring the reset button to get back control.
At this point I'm out of ideas on how to even debug the problem or how to
gather more information.

ASUS P4S533-E, 1024Mb, ATI Radeon 7500 (64Mb) 1920x1440x24, XFree86 4.2.99.4,
current cooker.

I'm currently running the 2.4.19-16 kernel which more or less works (I do get
a lot of digital distortion on the screen during some types of graphic
updates) but the system is usable.
