A griddle, as distinct from a frying pan, has very short sides.  That way 
the pancakes get crisp instead of steamed.

A griddle is solid surfaced.  I used to have one in the middle of my gas
stove.  A grill is not for eggs as everything would fall between the ribs of
the grill.
