Not sure how you do your shopping, but you can bring it to the store with you and label things as they get put in the cart. I have my groceries delivered and the delivery man always identifies things for me and I label as we go
Minimal training... Instructions are very simple and given in audio on the package ... You actually touch the pen friend to the dots on the package and all instructions are clearly spoken to you. Does the Pen Friend read the bar code to you so that you can record the label yourself for easy Access? If you need to have sighted help for labeling the cans, then it isn't going to be much help. How much training is needed to operate the pen friend. If it is as small as you say it is, and if it is so helpful and can be used without sighted help, then it is worth it.
