First, use honey to sweeten, as it'll get better results. This isn't the
recipe I use, but it's close.
For increasing the octane, you can use vodka of course, as it's neutral. Rum
will also work, and of course grain alcohol like EVerclear will also work.
But I'd probably use either a nice mead or mulled wine in it for spiking the
entire mix, or for individual mugs I'd get out the liqueurs like Barenjager,
Amaretto, Grand Marnier, or possibly Fra' Angelico.
