Hi John -

If this problem occurs primarily when you have maps loaded, you may also try 
reducing the Map Radius and Sampling Rate in Edit > Preferences > Maps > Map 
Parameters.  I've also found that enabling the Dynamic Map Sampling and Display 
Size options speed things up somewhat if you need to use a larger or 
higher-sampling-rate map.
