With both, because it was fixed in Coot after 0.8.7.

That was the first workaround. Then a better workaround was found:
disabling GL_FOG for the time of drawing bitmap fonts, based on the
discussion here:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=61412
So in the latest Coot this problem shouldn't happen.
