I got the error
NameError: name 'ROTAMERSEARCHLOWRES' is not defined
but I tried again with
coot.set_rotamer_search_mode(coot.ROTAMERSEARCHLOWRES)
and that worked. Thanks!

this to make it a default setting?
Yes. Coot now follows the XDG Base Directory Specification,
so ~/.config/Coot/startup.py
