Handy hint. In your .emacs, add this:
(add-hook 'java-mode-hook
(lambda ()
(progn
(set-variable 'show-trailing-whitespace t)
)))
(add-hook 'c-mode-hook
(lambda ()
(progn
(set-variable 'show-trailing-whitespace t)
)))
...and you'll never have any trouble with trailing whitespace again.
