I'm Brazilian, and can tell you that soccer is the passion of (at least) 99,9% of Brazilian men - women prefer soap operas...
In fact: on World Cups, when Brazilian team is playing, companies release their employees to go home and watch the game together with their families. When that is not possible (in hotels, hospitals and so on) employees gather around TV sets to watch it.
Passion for soccer starts on early childhood - usually motivated by fathers and older brothers.
Usually, kids root for the same team their father/elder brother does. There are some families, however, where each member roots for one team. This passion for different teams, however, does not cause serious conflicts among families.
